Those who are new to the mountains or less trained can opt for easier trails, such as scenic loops around the lakes or high-altitude paths encircling the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Cycling enthusiasts will also find plenty to enjoy in Auronzo: demanding routes for true mountain bike experts, as well as gentler rides perfect for families.

And what about the lakes? In winter, they enchant visitors with their poetic beauty. In summer, their waters come alive with wooden boats, pedal boats, and canoes — the latter often taking center stage during numerous international competitions.

And Auronzo during the autumn and spring? The transcolorization of the leaves and the meadows in bloom conquer everyone, experts and less experienced, young and old. Because no matter how difficult the path to do on foot or by bike: nature will steal the scene with its colorful shows, framed by the Dolomites.

Hikes and excursions

Hiking in Auronzo offers trails and routes for every level of difficulty, all set against the stunning backdrop of the Dolomiti UNESCO World Heritage and the iconic Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

In the company of the alpine guides you start equipped with backpack, shoes, technical clothing and everything you need for a safe excursion. In Auronzo it is possible to do trekking that occupy a day or several days, sleeping in the shelter. It is easy to come across small wild animals, see majestic birds of prey circling and chamois and ibexes chasing themselves at high altitude.

The vegetation changes as you go up and only a few flowers defy the great altitudes, taking root in the rock. The landscape is made by the moon and you can only hear the wind and the whistling alpine crows. The nights, sunrises and sunsets in a refuge among the Dolomites are among the most enchanting experiences imaginable. Nature in Auronzo still seems to retain its ancient spirit and deserves to be lived with the responsibility and respect due to such beauty.

Climbing

Climbing in Auronzo is wonderful.

Between Auronzo and Misurina there are some of the most beautiful climbing routes that can be found in the Dolomites and the panorama is unforgettable. It is possible to climb, for example, on the Group of Cadini di Misurina and on that of Popèna (Cristallo). On the Tre Cime di Lavaredo there are many medium and high difficulty routes and the normal route with a development of 600 meters and 2°/ 3°-.

Among the legendary routes, the “Comici-Dimai“: aerial, well bolted on the lower shots, really challenging in some points, conquest for the elegance of the line and its history.

In Auronzo you will find trails to test your endurance and your skills on MTB. For road bike lovers, Auronzo is a must-see destination. Dolomitic stage of multiple Giri d’Italia, has seen great champions compete on its roads immersed in quiet forests, with magnificent views of the Dolomites.

And for those who love to ride a bike, but need to pick up the pace? A good use of e-bikes, well calculating your energy and needs, can be the right stimulus to improve physical fitness. Even the little ones will find space for their first trips under the supervision of parents. And when they are tired, they can enjoy a good ice cream in the Dolomites, land of artisanal ice cream.

Lake Santa Caterina, in the heart of Auronzo, appears like a green gem set among the deep hues of conifer forests and pale dolomite rock. This artificial lake lies at around 800 meters above sea level and hosts international canoeing competitions, attracting teams from all over the world. Throughout the summer, these events bring vibrant energy to Auronzo, filling the town with colorful flags and creating a festive atmosphere that brings together canoe enthusiasts and visitors alike.

The lifts of Auronzo are part of the ski area that connects Auronzo-Cortina d’Ampezzo-San Vito di Cadore to the Dolomiti Superski, the largest ski destination in the world. The Dolomiti Superski combines 15 ski areas and 1,200 km of groomed slopes, for experienced skiers or beginners. Auronzo and Misurina offer slopes of every degree of difficulty and the possibility of a tasty break admiring the Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

Specifically in Auronzo, on Monte Agudo, you’ll find the Taiarezze/Malon and Malón chairlifts, as well as the Ansiei ski lift. Come and enjoy skiing in Auronzo di Cadore!

Ski touring

Practicing ski touring in Auronzo means venturing into the wildest side of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites.

It is vital to rely on the experience of alpine guides and prepare with the utmost care, considering the forecast, the avalanche bulletin and the weather of the period.

Ski touring in Auronzo is a true immersion into the essence of snow and ice. Light powder that rises with every step, crusted surfaces shaped by the wind, or heavier, wetter snow — each condition tells a different story. Everything depends on the quality of the snow, and knowing how to read it is essential. The reward for the climb comes at the summit: removing the skins from your skis, taking in an extraordinary panorama, feeling a satisfying sense of fatigue, and anticipating the descent. A descent that is never the same twice — it must be interpreted and adapted, shaped by the ever-changing conditions of the mountain.

Ski touring between the Dolomites and Auronzo is a form of immersion in nature. Awareness of one’s own means and an understanding of the surrounding environment are a fundamental part of this journey.

Cross-country skiing

Cross-country skiing in Auronzo offers many emotions: those linked to the tranquility of the woods and those produced by the beauty of nature between the Dolomites.

Auronzo has two areas dedicated to cross-country skiing: one is located in Misurina, the other at the Palus San Marco Cross-Country Centre. In Misurina there are two rings with departure and arrival at the Loita School Camp. One is blue, easy, 4 km and red, of medium-high difficulty, 5 km long. There is the possibility to rent cross-country skis and park your car near the start of the rings, which offer a spectacular view of the Dolomites.

At Palus San Marco, you’ll find three trails winding through the Foresta di Somadida,a protected State nature reserve. All routes start from Villa Gregoriana. The easiest trail is the blue route, stretching for 2 km and fully illuminated. The second, marked in red, runs for 6 km. The third is a more challenging 12 km course, featuring more technical descents for experienced skiers.
