Family activities

The center of Auronzo runs along the shores of the artificial lake of Santa Caterina, which is the protagonist of international canoe races in summer and is embraced by an easy loop trail.

Part of this path is marked by tables, corresponding to the “Active Communities” project, which invite people to walk a distance daily to acquire a healthy habit.

Don’t miss the typical dishes that can be enjoyed in Auronzo’s many restaurants and refuges. Recipes with strong and genuine flavors, with some simple and tasty local products, starting with good milk and cheese.

Senior holidays

Another playground with slides, swings, and zip lines is located near the famous Lago di Misurina, whose waters reflect the iconic Tre Cime di Lavaredo. In every season, you can follow the easy circular path around the lake, enjoying wonderful views of the Dolomites along the way. The meadows and forests at their feet are dressed in snow, blossoms, or brightly colored leaves, changing with the rhythm of the seasons.

So many places to stop for a sweet break or a hearty meal. Places to discover and savor, like the views from their tables and terraces.

Pedal boats and wooden rowboats glide across the calm waters of Lago di Misurina, sharing the lake with families of ducks and, at times, wild animals that cautiously approach the shoreline to drink.

In winter, the surface may freeze partially or completely. However, it is essential to remain cautious and never venture onto the ice, even when it appears solid.

Vacations for sportsmen

Auronzo di Cadore is a destination for sportsmen from all over the world, all year round.

In summer, you can enjoy a walk along Lago di Santa Caterina, which has hosted international canoe competitions for many years. Those who prefer MTB or e-bike activities will find numerous off-road routes in Auronzo di Cadore. And for road cycling enthusiasts, the Dolomite mountain passes offer legendary challenges — routes famously tackled by great champions during the Giro d’Italia.

There are countless hiking trails , from easy walks to more demanding routes for experienced hikers, as well as via ferratas leading to places of incomparable beauty and charm. Climbing enthusiasts can choose from dozens of routes suited to every level.

In winter, the opportunity to practice downhill skiing, cross-country skiing , and ski touring  attracts sports lovers who are left in awe of such natural splendor. In a mountain environment that remains, in many ways, wonderfully wild, careful attention to equipment is essential — but that’s not all. Proper clothing, a well-prepared backpack, and thorough planning of weather conditions and the chosen route are all vital factors. The company of a certified mountain guide is always recommended.

The Dolomites of Auronzo di Cadore

The Dolomites, a World Heritage Site, offer a backdrop of incredible beauty and a geological context whose uniqueness is recognized and valuable for what it tells.

It tells of a primordial, tropical sea and the telluric thrusts that brought forth rocks rich in buried treasures of fossils and footprints, from other eras. Rocks white to the point that they are colored by the sun’s rays, like the canvas of a tireless painter.

Especially at sunrise and sunset they are tinged with orange and pink hues, hence the name given to the delicate and enthralling phenomenon: Enrosadira. A moment so special that it is capable of stealing anyone’s attention and, it seems, even suspending time. A fascination so great that their majestic, almost architectural profiles have enraptured the hearts of great writers, poets, intellectuals, painters and filmmakers. But also that of children, who express their amazement simply with a vowel and draw them as they are, even without ever having seen them from life.

Because the Dolomites resemble the very archetype of the mountain: soaring, clear, imposing. And not only in relation to the astonishing Three Peaks of Lavaredo.

The history of Auronzo di Cadore

Inhabited since pre-Roman times, the area of Mount Calvario has been the subject of excavations that place Auronzo among the most interesting archaeological centers in northern Italy. The word “Cadore” is of Celtic origin and indicates how the area was dotted with fortresses due to its strategic geographical position.

Auronzo was also the scene of battles during the Great War-a dramatic aspect, recounted at the Palazzo Corte Metto Museum. The historic palace also houses a section on nature, archaeology and dedicated to mining in the Ansiei Valley.

Lake Antorno and film sets

At Lake Antorno, on the road leading to the Three Peaks, you can enjoy a privileged view of these icons of the Dolomites: some shots of the film “Jurassic World Dominion” and the TV series “Un passo dal cielo” were filmed here.

A short and pleasant ride around the lake allows you to appreciate the forest that reaches almost to the body of water. During the warm season, it is also possible to reach close to the shores of the lake with a stroller or wheelchair, with proper care.

The paths that branch off in this area are a source of wonder for the privileged views they offer of the Dolomites, a World Heritage Site.
